Effective Equipment Costing

An owner of a construction company approached us to determine and implement the charging of equipment costs on jobs. Our team determined the costs and expenses related to each piece of equipment which included a comparison of owning vs. market rental rates as well as direct and indirect costs.

The process we developed looked at the number of usage hours needed for each piece of equipment which provided data to management to make decisions. Once we determined the indirect pool of costs related to construction costs, the client was able to use this in their job cost estimates. The contractor was also able to reconcile actual indirect costs incurred. By providing a basis to allocate to jobs systematically, the contractor had a basis for determining the cost of each piece of equipment which assisted in the decision making process of trading in the piece of equipment, buying new or getting rid of the equipment if renting the same piece was more profitable.

The result of effective equipment costing increased profitability for the company and provided the owners, estimators, project managers and the financial team with a better understanding of the interworking of the process which enabled them to work together instead of operating in separate silos.
