Women’s History Month: Celebrating Women in Accounting
For the past few years, we have dedicated the last week of Women’s History Month to spotlight women from our firm. This year, we asked our women in accounting, “who inspired you to pursue a career in accounting?” We hope you find their responses inspiring, enlightening and relatable.
Sweta Joshi, CPA
“Since my mom majored in economics, I developed a business and financial data mindset early on,” said Sweta Joshi, CPA, tax manager. “I chose the accounting industry because I knew that regardless of market conditions or wherever I decided to live in the world, I would be able to sustain myself financially.”
Adrienne Straccione, CPA, CCIFP
As a child, Adrienne Straccione, CPA, CCIFP, and partner-in-charge of our Philadelphia office, was inspired by her grandmother. “My grandmother was a bookkeeper, and I loved visiting her house to play with her office supplies, her toy cash register, and to count Monopoly money—accounting must run in my blood!”
Suzanne Feldman, CPA, MT
Suzanne Feldman, CPA, MT, is a senior tax manager who discovered her passion for accounting in high school. “I excelled in accounting and found it easy,” she recalls. When it was time to choose a college major, her father advised her to pursue what she was good at. Over the past 40 years, she has truly enjoyed her career as a CPA.
Maureen Briggs
When Maureen Briggs, a senior in audit and assurance, was in high school, her mother suggested, “why don’t you consider accounting?” At the time, Maureen couldn’t imagine pursuing a career in accounting. Like many 18-year-olds entering college, she chose a different major that required strong math skills: engineering. Fortunately, when Maureen later decided to switch her major to accounting, her mother didn’t say, “I told you so.” It turned out to be a fortunate decision, as Maureen has been enjoying her accounting career ever since.
Sarah Omietanski
My mom and my eighth-grade math teacher, Mrs. Reed, inspired me to choose accounting,” said Sarah Omietanski, a junior accountant. “My math teacher helped me fall in love with math, and my mom encouraged me to consider accounting as a career. I couldn’t do this without her support throughout the process.”
The women at Wouch Maloney have taken diverse paths to build their careers in accounting. Whether through the influence of role models, mentors, teachers, or by someone who highlighted accounting as a clear career choice, each of these women has found satisfaction in their profession.
