Tax Update and Reminders for 2022
As 2022 begins, we at Wouch Maloney are continually grateful for the opportunity to serve you. We hope that you enjoyed the holiday season and had a chance to spend time (in-person or virtual) with family and friends. As always, as your trusted business advisors, we are here to assist you with navigating the ever-changing tax laws.
Items of Note
There are a few items specific to 2021 that could impact your tax filing including:
- The American Rescue Plan (The “Plan”), which was enacted in March 2021, provided a one-year expansion of the child tax credit. The credit increased from $2,000 to $3,000 for children ages 6 through 17 and $3,600 for children ages 5 or under. Half of these credits may have been paid in advance from July through December. The Plan also authorized a third round of stimulus checks (Economic Impact Payments) which provided much-needed relief during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
- The IRS is sending letters regarding the 2021 advance Child Tax Credit (CTC) starting late December 2021 and continuing into January. The letter will include the total amount of advance CTC payments taxpayers received in 2021 and the number of qualifying children used to calculate the advance payments.
- Economic Impact Payment (EIP): The IRS will begin issuing letters in late January to recipients of the third EIP. This letter will help recipients of the third EIP determine if they are entitled to and should claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their tax year 2021 tax returns that they file in 2022.
Tax Filing Deadline for Individual Returns
The tax filing deadline for 2021 individual returns (or extensions) is Monday, April 18, 2022.
