Exempt Organizations Haunted by IRS Revocation Notices

The numerous relief efforts made by the IRS due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult to keep up with all of the issued changes. For exempt organizations that run on a calendar-year, Form 990 must be filed by May 15. Due to the pandemic, the IRS extended the Form 990 deadline from May 15 to July 15, which coincided with the extended tax deadline.

If an exempt organization fails to file for three consecutive years, the exempt status is automatically revoked by the IRS. Unfortunately, the IRS was unable to update the extended form deadline in its program. Now some exempt organizations are receiving revocation notices prematurely.

To remedy the situation, the IRS is processing paper filings that will allow for the reversal of the prematurely issued auto-revocations for the exempt organizations that were impacted.

If you received a notice from the IRS or need assistance completing your Form 990, please contact our office at 215.675.8364.
