Scam Text Messages Impersonating Philadelphia Dept of Revenue

We continue to receive inquiries from clients regarding scam text messages impersonating the Philadelphia Department of Revenue.

Earlier this week, we shared information about this issue on our social media channels, but we want to provide more details for those who may not be aware of the fraudulent texts targeting tax payers in the City of Philadelphia.

Please note that the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Revenue will never ask for sensitive data via text.

The following has been posted by the Philadelphia Department of Revenue:

“We are aware of SMS text message scams targeting taxpayers. THESE TEXTS ARE NOT FROM THE PHILADELPHIA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE. We will never ask for bank or refund payment information over text. Proceed cautiously, do not click links, and block unknown senders. Thank you to every taxpayer who reported this to us. For official refund information, visit tax-services.phila.gov.”

Do not respond to any text message claiming to be from the Philadelphia Department of Revenue and do not click on any link in the message.

CONTENT OF TEXT MESSAGE

The content of these fraudulent messages claim your refund request through the Philadelphia Department of Revenue was processed and approved.

The fraudulent text provides a malicious link where you are instructed to provide banking information by a certain deadline. If you follow the instructions, the text claims they will deposit the funds into your bank account or mail a paper check.

REMAIN VILIGANT

Most fraudulent texts try to evoke emotions to make the reader feel fearful that if they do not respond immediately, they will miss an opportunity that usually involves money.
